Typical Transmitted-Light Shutter Housing Installation

This particular procedure outlines the steps necessary to install the ASI Shutter in the tungsten illumination light path of the Nikon Diaphot TMD microscope. The shutter mounts between the black plastic filter holder and the beige metal tower of the microscope. When installed, the shutter becomes an integral part of the microscope and minimizes the increase in the length of the light path due to its presence. Please refer to your microscope manual for details not covered in this procedure.

You will need the following tools:

  • Medium Phillips Screwdriver
  • 2.5mm Allen Wrench
  • 0.050" Allen Wrench

(The 2.5mm and 0.050" Allen wrenches are provided by ASI.)

  1. Disconnect the microscope from the source of electrical power.

  2. Remove the lamp housing from the diascopic illumination unit/tower. Please refer to your microscope manual if instruction on the removal is required.

  3. Slide out the filter sliders from the filter holder assembly. Please note: The metal spring retaing clip that holds the sliders in place will fall out when the last slider is removed. Before removing the last slider, you may want to note the orientation of this clip for reinstallation. The clip goes into the holder with the bent springs pointing up, and the solid portion that touches the filter sliders pointing down.

  4. Remove the filter holder from the diascopic unit/tower by removing the four M3 x 10 Phillips panhead screws that secure it to the unit.

  5. Locate the ASI Shutter Housing and mounting screws. Use the 0.050" Allen wrench to remove the four 2/56 x ½" screws that secure the two halves together. Attach the thick shutter housing half to the diascopic unit using the four M3 x10mm screws removed in the above step. Orient it so that the flat faces downward.

  6. Locate the Uniblitz shutter. Please Note: Great care must be used when handling the shutter. If the vanes are bent, even slightly, the shutter will be damaged. Always handle the shutter by the edges. Position it onto the housing half just installed. Orient it with the Uniblitz label at the bottom facing outward. The coil will face upward. Make sure that the electrical cable is in the groove on the left side and the screw holes are aligned. Place the other half of the shutter housing over the shutter. Align the screw holes and secure it in place using the four 2/56 x ½" buttonhead screws. Use the 0.050" Allen wrench to tighten the screws.

  7. Attach the filter holder that was removed in step # 4 to the outer shutter housing that was just installed using the four 4/40 x ½" Philips head screws provided. These screws may already be installed in the shutter housing and will have to be removed so that the filter holder can be installed.

  8. Reinstall the filter sliders and the lamp housing that were removed.
