Stage Inserts

Insert Sizes and Types:

  160 x 110 mm Inserts

160 x 110 mm Inserts
Click for larger picture The 160 x 110 inserts adhere to a stage insert standard popularized by Marzhauser with the scanning stages they made for Zeiss and Leica, as well as for their own stages. Sometimes referred to as "K-Style", these inserts fit many manufacturers' stages including ASI, Ludl, Prior, and others.

All 160 x 110 mm inserts fit on ASI's MS-2000, MS-4000 & MS-4400 stages, and all piezo-top PZ, PZU, PZM, & PZMU stage models. However, depending on your optical and Kohler illumination requirements, some inserts work better with some stage models on some microscopes than with others (see Choosing the appropriate Insert).

 160 x 110 mm SLIDE Inserts

I-3091 Universal Insert
Click for larger picture The I-3091 universal insert has a pair of adjustable sliders that allow it to accept a number of different sized slides, as well as smaller Petri dishes up to 70 mm (2.75") in diameter. I-3093HR/DR Medium-Rise Dual Rotating Slide Insert
Click for larger picture This is a special version of the I-3096DR with a slightly shallower recession that places the bottom of a slide about 5.0 mm below the top of the insert. This medium-rise insert offers a compromise between the closest an upright microscope's objective can approach from above versus the maximum a condenser can be extended from below and still obtain Kohler illumination.
I-4012 Slide Insert with Finger
Click for larger picture The I-4012 slide insert accepts most slides with a standard width of 75 mm (3"). I-4015 Ultra High-Rise Slide Insert with Finger
Click for larger picture This is a special version of the I-4012 that places the bottom of a slide approximately flush with the top of ASI's PZU-2000 stage. This allows objectives on upright microscopes to be rotated without interference, however, Kohler illumination is not possible with this insert.
I-4016 Flush Slide Insert with Finger
Click for larger picture This is a special version of the I-4012 that places the bottom of a slide flush with the top of the insert. The insert has a milled-out bottom to allow objective clearance. Available for upright microscopes that cannot move close enough to achieve correct focusing, however, Kohler illumination may not be possible with this insert.

Click to go to MS-2000 web page. The 116 x 116 inserts fit ASI's old-style upright MS-2000 small stage (new-style versions use 160 x 110 inserts). This stage fits well on these smaller upright microscopes:

 116 x 116 mm SLIDE Inserts

S-2010 Slide Insert with Finger
Click for larger picture The S-2010 slide insert accepts most 75 mm (3") standard width slides. The unit has a silver spring-loaded finger that holds the slide in place. The finger can easily be pulled back to load slides which rest on top of the insert, an advantage when screening large numbers of samples. However, because the slide sits flush with the top of the insert, and hence, the stage, it may be difficult to raise the condenser close enough to the slide to obtain proper Kohler illumination. In that case, a condenser extender should be used with this insert to raise the condenser towards the slide.
S-2011 Dual Slide Insert
Click for larger picture  Similar Picture
The S-2011 slide insert accepts either a single 25x75 mm (1” x 3”) or a 50x75 mm (2” x 3”) slide. The unit is slightly recessed to place the bottom of a slide about 1.5 mm below the top of the insert. The S-2011 offers the advantage of versatility and low cost. However, as with the S-2010 above, a condenser extender may be necessary to obtain proper Kohler illumination.
S-2012 Single Rotating Slide Insert
Click for larger picture The S-2012 slide insert accepts standard 25x75 mm (1" x 3") slides and allows for a full 360-degree continuous rotation of the slide. The unit is recessed to place the bottom of a slide about 7.5 mm below the top of the insert, therefore, a condenser extender may not be needed. However, the recession does make slide loading more cumbersome, and some objectives may rub if the stage is not lowered before changing their position. This insert also holds a 55 mm Petri dish.
S-2014 Dual Rotating Slide Insert
Click for larger picture The S-2014 slide insert accepts either a single 25x75 mm (1” x 3”) or a 50x75 mm (2” x 3”) slide. and allows for a full 360-degree continuous rotation of the slide. The unit is recessed to place the bottom of the slide about 7.5 mm below the top of the insert, therefore, a condenser extender may not be needed in some applications. S-2016 High-Rise Dual Rotating Slide Insert
Click for larger picture This is a special version of the S-2014 with a much shallower recession that places the bottom of a slide about 3.1 mm below the top of the insert. Available for upright microscopes that cannot move close enough to achieve correct focusing, although a condenser extender may be needed to obtain Kohler illumination.
S-2017 Medium-Rise Dual Rotating Slide Insert
Click for larger picture This is a special version of the S-2014 with a slightly shallower recession that places the bottom of a slide about 5.0 mm below the top of the insert. This medium-rise insert offers a compromise between the closest an upright microscope's objective can approach from above versus the maximum a condenser can be extended from below and still obtain Kohler illumination.

RS-3000 & I-8004 Motorized Rotary Stage Insert for MS-8000
Click for larger picture This insert has an RS-3000 motorized rotary stage mounted to an I-8004 plate insert, and in this case, with a 150 mm diameter vacuum chuck affixed. Resolution is 0.12 arc-minutes with ASI's closed-loop DC servomotor drive.
I-8008 Glass Plate Insert for MS-8000
Click for larger picture The I-8008 glass insert provides a large specimen area the full size of the insert. It is made of 4.8 mm (3/16") clear tempered glass. (This insert does not have set screws in the corners for leveling capability.)

Inserts are designed to place their samples at a particular depth relative to their height. Generally, inserts on inverted microscope stages try to place the specimen as low as possible, while inserts on upright microscope stages try to place the specimen as high as possible.
Some microscopes are versatile enough to use either insert, and on some stage systems only certain inserts can be used.
When their objectives cannot be lowered close enough to achieve focus, some systems require shallow or high-rise inserts (for example, an I-4013 or I-3094HR/DR insert), however, this can be an problem with Kohler illumination if the condenser cannot be raised high enough — in this case, a condenser extender is usually employed.
Some microscope models (e.g., Nikon E800/1000) may use large DIC condensers that cannot be extended — in those cases (and depending on the stage) a compromise or medium-rise insert is chosen (for example, an I-4014 or I-3093HR/DR insert) to lower the specimen enough to attain Kohler illumination yet remain high enough that the objective can still be focused.

ASI Stage Inserts can have set screws in their corners to allow leveling capability.  Many of these stage inserts also fit other manufacturers' stage models.  ASI machining tolerances are ±0.1 mm (±0.005")

CE-50 45 mm Dovetail Mount with 33.2 mm Hole
Click for larger picture Raises condenser by 10.3 mm (0.41"). Three capture/centering screws around 50.0 mm (1.97") opening on female side.
For use with the following microscopes:
Leica:   DMLB, DMLS
Nikon:   All Optiphots, E400, E600, E800
Olympus:   AX-70, BH-2, BX50/60, BX51/61
CE-AXIO 53.6 mm Dovetail Mount with 31.7 mm Hole
